A mastectomy is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of the mammary gland, primarily as a treatment for breast cancer. When is it recommended?

As the primary treatment for different types of breast cancer.
In cases where conservative surgery (lumpectomy) is not a viable option due to the size or location of the tumor.
As a prophylactic mastectomy, a risk-reducing measure in women with a genetic mutation (e.g., BRCA1/2) that significantly increases the likelihood of developing breast cancer.
When cancer recurs in the same breast after previous conservative treatment.
